Conservation Workshop of Stone<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n

In the conservation workshop of stone, which operates since 1994, sculptures and architectural members \u2013 most of them made of marble \u2013 are conserved. They come from excavations in Thessaloniki and its broader region. Most sculptures of the Museum\u2019s permanent exhibition have been conserved in the workshop\u2019s space, which gradually was strengthened with equipment and staff. All artifacts conserved are recorded, documented and photographed and all the stages of conservation are kept on file. Sculptures, destined for temporary exhibitions of the Museum, are also conserved in the workshop.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the conservation workshop has conserved sculptures from the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Thessaloniki, the Ephorate of Antiquities of the town and the region of Kavala and from the Tellogleion Foundation of Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.<\/p>\n

Among the tasks of the workshop\u2019s conservators is the control of the conservation status of the sculptures of the permanent exhibition, the concern for the safe storage of the Museum\u2019s sculptures as well as their preventive conservation. Moreover the control of the sculptures sent to exhibitions outside the Museum as well as the writing of the \u201ccondition reports\u201d, which accompany them.<\/p>\n

Guided tours and educational visits are carried out in the workshop\u2019s rooms and undergraduate students of the conservation science from Greece and abroad make their practice there. They, at the same time, enrich their knowledge and contribute to the workshop\u2019s work.<\/p>\n
